People who can help

  • Your Personal Academic Tutor may be the person you go to first - if they don’t have all the answers, they will be able to put you in contact with the right people to help
  • If you study in-person at one of our college centres, you might prefer to talk to the local centre staff who will be able to put you in touch with Student Support, or may know of other local services which might help
  • You might choose to go to your GP
  • In addition to the local offer, UHI offers the Green Button - a free, confidential online counselling service: online counselling allows you to access support at a time and in a place which is convenient to you

What is counselling and how does it work?

Counselling is a talking therapy provided in a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space to talk about any issues or concerns you have. Being able to express and explore your feelings, thoughts and behaviours gives you the opportunity to develop a better understanding of yourself and others.

The aim is to enable you to find your own solutions, whether that is making effective changes in your life or to find ways of coping with your situation.

Visit Thinking About Therapy? for more information on counselling and therapy. This useful website provides guidance on what therapy is and how it can help you; what to expect from a session, along with a host of other beneficial resources.
