The Centre for Recreation and Tourism Research (CRTR)

The Centre for Recreation and Tourism Research (CRTR) is one of Scotland’s leading tourism research centres, with a huge network of overseas colleagues, clients and collaborators and an impressive portfolio of activity built up since the centre’s inception in 2012. Located in the Outdoor Capital of the UK, the centre is uniquely placed for tourism research and undertakes a range of activities, from academic and applied research to participation in major trans-national projects.

Our research interests, whether in terms of academic activity or industry-facing knowledge exchange projects, are diverse and range from adventure recreation and cultural heritage tourism to digital marketing and regenerative tourism.

Staff members at the centre work closely on a number of initiatives with the School of Adventure Studies, the UK’s leading provider of adventure and marine tourism education, and other UHI partners, such as the Centre for Mountain Studies, the Centre for Living Sustainability and the Institute for Northern Studies.

If you are a business with an idea you want to explore, we are able to access innovation funding to undertake collaborations with SMEs that help you to diversify what you offer, promote what you do, explore new markets or develop new ways to commercialise your operations.
