What is special about this course?
This course is directed at school leavers or anyone interested in a career in Engineering or Construction. It will combine construction & engineering subject areas with the addition of core skills in Maths, English, and IT. National 4 Maths will be included within the core skills offer. This pre-apprenticeship training course and broad subject range will enhance employability and offer a suitable progression route to apprenticeships or NC level 5 studies.
Entry requirements
A selection of National 3 or National 4 awards.

Our core skills qualifications underpin our technical qualifications. They build learners’ confidence with the core skills required for employment, including the capacity to problem solve and use technology effectively.
Carpentry & Joinery
You will be given a detailed introduction to the tools and materials used in joinery. There is a lot of hands-on practical work, where you can develop and refine your skills in producing a range of woodworking joints.
Plumbing
You will learn about the basics of household plumbing. Full instruction will be provided in the use of plumbing tools and you will gain practical experience in the installation of systems using push fit and compression connection methods.
Electrical Wiring skills
You will receive instruction in electrical wiring skills, including soldering and electrical inspection and testing. Instruction will be provided in the use of a wide range of tools and equipment to produce and test basic electrical circuits.
Welding
You will learn how to produce a variety of welded joints in the flat and horizontal/vertical positions using the Metal Inert Gas (MIG) and Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding processes. You will also learn about the causes of common weld defects and how to check the quality of your welds.
Bench-fitting & Machining
You will be provided with the opportunity to acquire essential workshop skills such as reading of drawings, marking out, sawing, filing, drilling, tapping and machining. Candidates will produce components and carry out dimensional quality checks.
