BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering

I’m a firefighter, rugby player and I love working on cars and motorbikes so I think I buck the trend a little bit anyway.  When I was younger I could see myself doing a practical, hands-on job that probably wouldn’t be the norm for a woman. In 2016/17, after a few years of working, I returned to full-time education do my Highers. At that point I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do at all, I was simply focused on getting my Highers so I’d have some options. I think it was through doing maths and physics that I realised I quite liked working things out and problem-solving.  I took a look at the course catalogue and saw that the HNC Engineering systems ticked all the boxes for my interests.

The style of teaching is really good: we get a mix of face-to-face and online classes, and some of our subjects are taught online via other UHI campuses with local support available. I think this is a good approach as you get a good variety of lecturers with different experiences and that keeps it interesting. The lecturers are great.  They’ll go out of their way to make sure we understand what they’re teaching and will happily help with any questions that we have. The course material and the way it’s delivered is easy to follow and come to the end of the year we are confident that we have everything we need to complete assessments and sit the exams.
