The Origin: LCC UHI Music Staff and Graduates Present Programme at The Stanley Pickers Gallery in London.

As part of Ben Judd’s Stanley Picker Fellowship project The Origin, a series of workshops, performances, talks and tours will take place at Stanley Picker Gallery, a boat moored in Kingston Upon Thames and online throughout June and July 2021.

On 24 June, a short online programme of events has been curated by Senior Lecturer Anna-Wendy Stevenson, featuring BA Applied Music and MA Music and the Environment students and graduates from the University of the Highlands and Islands.  The programme highlights the development of innovative and world reaching university music courses led from an island context and includes a talk, performances, a Gaelic singing workshop, and the premier of a short (7 min) film, ‘Land of Our Kin’.

24 June 2pm Talk by Anna Wendy Stevenson

Anna Wendy Stevenson will give an online talk about her work. Anna Wendy is Senior lecturer and Programme Leader for the University of the Highlands and Island’s innovative BA (Hons) Applied Music degree. A fiddler and composer, she has performed and delivered workshops in traditional Scottish music world-wide and curated and directed events for a wide range of organisations, communities, media groups and festivals in the UK, Canada, USA, Australia and Europe.

24 June 2.30pm Film Screening & Gaelic Singing Workshop

Chloe Steele, UHI graduate and traditional Gaelic singer and piper from South Uist, will screen Bann nam Baghasdal, a short film documentary capturing the unique culture and lifestyle in two townships in South Uist, Scotland and Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Following this, Chloe will teach a tradition Gaelic song. No prior experience is required!

24 June 3.30pm Screening of ‘Land of Our Kin’

‘Land of Our Kin’ is a reflection on community and building communities online, across island, rural and urban contexts during Covid, through the delivery of a creative brief commissioning new music to celebrate Community Land Scotland’s 10-year anniversary. This case study is a beautiful examination of building resilience and togetherness among an internationally distributed, multi-genre music student cohort.  Beginning the academic year in the thick of the pandemic, the group topped and tailed the calendar with blogs for the University’s research theme ‘The Edge’ – starting with considering what being part of community meant and how creativity would be employed to encourage collaboration within the widely spread cohort. Students collaborated to write and record a song ‘The Land of Our Kin’ and wrote the following blog capturing and reflecting on the process: The Edge: music, community & creativity – “The Edge”.

Oileanach aig Colaisde a’ Chaisteil a’ Buannachadh Duais Chudromach Nàiseanta Preantasachd

Chaidh an t-oileanach Megan Fearghastan aig Colaisde a’ Chaisteil a taghadh bho mhìltean de thagraichean air feadh na dùthcha gus a bhith mar aon de 40 airson buannachadh Preantasachd chudromach Prògram Preantas Teicnigeach Ola agus Gas (OGTAP).

Tha an sgeama OGTAP a’ tabhann raon de dhiosaplain agus tha e air a sponsoradh le gnìomharaichean cumhachd mòra agus cùmhnantairean

Tha Megan dìreach air an NC Einnseanaireachd Meacanaigeach a chrìochnachadh aig LCC UHI agus thuirt i, “Bha àrainn LCC UHI a riamh iongantach dhomhsa, tha a h-uile ball den sgioba-obrach air an tàinig mi tarsainn air fàilte mhòr a chur orm, eadar luchd-obrach an t-seòmar-bidhe agus na h-òraidichean.

Tha na h-òraidichean air fad ag obair gu cruaidh ach tha iad air leth càirdeil agus làn spòrs.  Tha seo a’ còrdadh rium gu mòr oir tha e a’ ciallachadh gu bheil thu a’ faighinn saorsa bho ro-uallach an uair a bhios tu a’ cur seachad 30 mionaidean a’ faighinn cothrom dibhearsain leis an fheadhainn a tha còmhla riut air a’ chlas agus an òraidiche. 

Sna beagan bhliadhnaichean a chaidh seachad, tha LCC UHI air a bhith ag obair gus boireannaich a bhrosnachadh a dhol an sàs ann an cùrsaichean a tha gu  tric air am faicinn mar fheadhainn sa bheil fireannaich nas motha an sàs mar saidheans, teicneòlas, einnseanaireachd agus matamataig (STEM).  Is i Megan aon de thriùir bhoireannaich a tha dol a chrìochnachadh a’ chùrsa NC Einnseanaireachd Meacanaigeach am bliadhna.

Thuirt Megan cuideachd, “Thagh mi einnseanaireachd a dhèanamh oir is e rud a bha ann san robh mi an sàs on bha mi glè òg. Bha mi gus an sgoil fhàgail agus cha robh mi fhathast cinnteach dè a bha mi airson a dhèanamh agus thagh mi clas obair meatailt a dhèanamh mar aon de na clasaichean agam air a’ bhliadhna sin agus chòrd an clas agus an àrainn a bha na lùib gu mòr rium.

Cha b’ urrainn dhomh a bhith na bu thaingeil airson nan òraidichean a bha agam, gu h-àraid Alasdair Macdhòmhnaill agus Seumas Macleòid. Eadhoin tro dhuilgheadasan covid, thug na h-òraidichean againn ionnsachadh dhuinn anns an dòigh a b’ fheàrr a b’ urrainn agus thug iad dhuinn taic tron seo uile.  Is urrainn dha a bhith doirbh a bhith ag atharrachadh an stoidhle ionnsachaidh agad bho aghaidh-ri-aghaidh gu air-loidhne, ach chaidh e cùisean glè mhath dhuinne, agus tha mi air leth toilichte leis mar a bha e.
