Sir Michael Palin offers support to the launch of new Geography Degree at Lews Castle College UHI.

Lews Castle College UHI are launching a new BA (Hons) in Geography and Sir Michael Palin had been one of the first to offer his support to the course.

World famous explorer, actor, author and comedian, Sir Michael Palin is the former President of the Royal Geographical Society and has previously described Geography as, “a living, breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. It is dynamic and relevant. For me geography is a great adventure with a purpose.”

Sir Palin, offered LCC UHI and the future Geography students words of encouragement, “To all on the Geography course at Lews Castle College UHI,

Geography is the subject of the moment. As the most basic concerns about our continued existence on the planet are being raised at the highest level, the relevance of geography becomes more important than ever.

Geography asks the questions we need to answer.

The more you know about Geography the more you know about the future.”

Geography is at the heart of many local and global current issues, and LCC UHI recognised the need and demand from students to examine areas such as land use, climate change, planning and development, globalisation, energy and tourism, from a social science perspective. This course offers students the opportunity to explore the inter-relationships between people, place and the environment and how these vary across and between places.

Programme Leader, Dr Eilidh MacPhail, said, “This new course will allow students from across the Highlands and Islands and beyond to study a recognised subject from home, allowing them to understand and discuss many of the issues facing our region and the wider world: from renewable energy development to tourism, from climate change to migration, all of which will be crucial to our communities’ futures.”

Geography graduates are among the most employable: in addition to expertise in many relevant sectors for employment, students will leave the course with highly transferable skills. Observation, data collection and analytical skills, combined with specific skills in using specialist mapping tools and software, enable graduates to be independent researchers and apply these attributes in a range of careers.

Donna Gillies, Teacher of Geography & Psychology, The Nicolson Institute in Stornoway said, “This course provides an excellent opportunity for our pupils to continue their Geography studies into Further Education while living, and potentially working, at home. The local area right on our doorstep provides endless opportunities for fieldwork and research at a time when career options in Geography related fields are developing rapidly.”

This degree is delivered entirely online, by tutors with years of experience of teaching at a distance, and can be studied from anywhere in the world, full or part-time to suit your circumstances.

Bhrosnaich Sir Palin Colaisde a’ Chaisteil UHI agus oileanaich Cruinn-eòlais le bhith ag ràdh, “Do gach neach air cùrsa Cruinn-eòlais aig Colaisde a’ Caisteil, is e cuspair aimsireil a th’ ann an Cruinn-eòlas.  Fhad ’s a tha iomagain mu sheasmhachd na cruinne-cè air a dheasbad aig an ìre an àirde, tha iomchaidheachd Cruinn-eòlais nas cudromiache na bha e a-riamh.

Bidh Cruinn-eòlas a’ togail nan ceistean cudromach.

Mar as motha am fiosrachaidh a tha agad mu chruinn-eòlas ’s ann as motha am fiosrachadh a bhios agad mun àm ri teachd.”

Tha Cruinn-eòlas aig cridhe iomadh cuspair ionnadail agus cruinneil.  Tha Colaisde a’ Chaisteil UHI ag aithneachadh gu bheil oileanaich ag iarraidh sgrùdadh a dhèanamh, bho shealladh saidheans sòisealta, air cuspairean leithid cleachdadh-fearainn, atharrachadh gnàth-shìde, plannadh agus leasachadh, cruinneachas, lùth agus turasachd.  Tha an cùrsa seo a’ toirt cothrom do dh’oileanaich an ceangal eadar daoine, àite agus àireannachd a sgrùdadh, agus beachdachadh air mar a tha an ceangal seo eadar-dhealaichte ann an diofar àitean.

Faodaidh ceum ann an Cruinn-eòlas cothroman obrach fìor mhath fhosgladh do luchd-ceumnachaidh.  Chan e a-mhàin gum faighear eòlas air roinnean obrach iomchaidh, ach cuideachd gheibh oileanaich sgilean a ghabhas an cleachdadh ann an diofar shuidheachaidhean.  Gheibh oileanaich oideachadh ann an sgilean sgrùdaidh, tionnal data agus sgilean rannsachail, cuide ri sgilean sònraichte a thaobh bathar-bog a chleachdadh.  Tha seo uile gan ullachadh gus a bhith nan luchd-rannsachaidh neo-eisimileach, a bhios comasach air na sgilean aca a chur an cèill ann am farsaingeachd de dh’obraichean.

Thuirt Donna NicIllIosa, Tidsear Cruinn-eòlais agus Saidhceòlais, ann an Sgoil MhicNeacail,Steòrnabhagh, “Tha an cùrsa seo a’ toirt deagh chothrom do na sgoilearan againn leantainn orra le Cruinn-eòlas gu ìre Foghlam Àrd Ìre, agus tha e a’ toirt cothom dhaibh fuireach aig an taigh aig a’ cheart àm,’s dòcha cuideachd gum bi iad fiù ’s ag obair bhon taigh.  Tha an àrainneachd air an starsaich againn a’ toirt iomadh cothrom dhaibh a dhol an sàs ann an obair-làraich agus rannsachadh aig àm nuair a tha cothroman obrach ann an Cruinn-eòlas a’ meudachadh.”

Tha an ceum air a lìbhrigeadh gu tur air-loidhne le luchd-oide aig a bheil deagh eòlas a thaobh teagasg air astar.  ’S urrainnear an ceum a dhèanamh ann an àite sam bith san t-saoghal, agus faodar a dhèanamh air stèidh làn-ùine no pàirt-ùine.
