Lews Castle College UHI to change name to better represent geographic reach

One of the leading further and higher educational establishments in the Highlands and Islands is to change its name next month.

Lews Castle College UHI will become UHI Outer Hebrides in a move designed to better represent the geographic reach of a college which has campuses in Stornoway, Barra, North Uist, Benbecula and, from August 2022, South Uist.

The rebranding follows a consultation process which included staff, students and a wide range of stakeholders and which demonstrated overwhelming support for the change of brand name.

Lews Castle College Principal, Sue Macfarlane, commented, “We are extremely proud of the history and heritage of Lews Castle College, but we have not operated from the Castle for decades and it often causes confusion among those engaging with us at student, business and stakeholder levels.

It is very important we recognise the breadth and width of the Outer Hebrides and all the island communities we serve.”

The name change is part of a wider refresh of the UHI visual identity this Spring.

Sue Macfarlane continued, “We are, of course, aware that we are currently part of the Rural and Islands Colleges Merger consultation process, along with North Highland College UHI and West Highland College UHI. We will not know the outcome of this until 2023 or whether a merged college will adopt a single brand or retain individual names.  With this in mind, we have decided to go ahead with our change of name in order to create an identity that is relevant and relatable to communities in all our College locations.”

Colaisde a' Chaisteil UHI ag atharrachadh ainm gus ruigsinneachd cruinn-eòlasach a riochdachadh nas fheàrr

Tha fear de na prìomh ionadan foghlaim adhartach is àrd-ìre air a' Ghàidhealtachd 's na h-Eileanan gu bhith ag atharrachadh ainm an ath mhìos.

Tha Colaisde a’ Chaisteil UHI gu bhith air a h-ainmeachadh UHI Innse Gall  ann an gluasad a chaidh a dhealbhadh gus riochdachadh nas fheàrr a dhèanamh air ruigsinneachd cruinn-eòlasach colaiste aig a bheil àrainnean ann an Steòrnabhagh, Barraigh, Uibhist a Tuath, Beinn na Faoghla agus bhon Lùnastal 2022, Uibhist a Deas.

Tha an ath-bhranndadh a’ leantainn pròiseas co-chomhairleachaidh le luchd-obrach, oileanaich agus raon farsaing de luchd-ùidhe agus a thaisbean taic fìor mhath airson atharrachadh san ainm branndaidh.

Thuirt Sue NicPhàrlain, Prionnsapal Colaisde a’ Chaisteil,  “Tha sinn air leth pròiseil à eachdraidh agus dualchas Colaisde a’ Chaisteil, ach chan eil sinn air a bhith ag obair a-mach às a’ Chaisteal airson deicheadan de bhliadhnaichean agus bidh e gu tric ag adhbhrachadh troimh-chèile am measg an fheadhainn a tha a’ com-pàirteachadh leinn aig ìrean oileanach, gnothachas agus luchd-ùidhe.

Tha e air leth cudromach gun aithnich sinn farsaingeachd agus leud nan Eilean Siar agus nan coimhearsnachdan eileanach a tha sinn sinn a’ frithealadh.”

Tha an t-atharrachadh ainm mar phàirt de dh’ath-ùrachadh nas fharsainge air dearbh-aithne lèirsinneach UHI as t-Earrach seo.

Lean Sue NicPhàrlain, “Tha sinn gu h-àraid mothachail gu bheil sinn an-dràsta mar phàirt de phròiseas co-chomhairleachaidh Co-aonadh nan Colaistean Dùthchail is nan Eilean, còmhla ri Colaiste na Gàidhealtachd a Tuath UHI agus Colaiste na Gàidhealtachd an Iar UHI. Cha bhi fios againn air a’ bhuil gu 2023 no am bi colaiste aonaichte a’ gabhail ri aon bhrannd no a’ cumail ainmean fa leth. Le seo san amharc, tha sinn air co-dhùnadh a dhol air adhart le ar n-ainm atharrachadh gus dearbh-aithne a chruthachadh a tha iomchaidh agus dàimheil do choimhearsnachdan anns a h-uile làrach Colaiste againn.”
