Macmillan Engineering Ltd

“We are an engineering firm based in Stornoway in the Western Isles. We carry out a comprehensive range of engineering services which include marine servicing through to complete boat refits as well as general fabrication, welding and pipefitting services.

We have employed two apprentices who had completed their NC and SVQ Level 2 at the College prior to employment.  During their apprenticeship they progressed to SVQ level 3 and eventually becoming tradesmen.

We have recently employed two further fabricator/welding apprentices both of these having completed courses to HNC level backed up with the SVQ level 2 qualifications.

We are now looking to progress these apprentices to SVQ level 3 so that they become fully qualified tradesmen.

We have always liaised well with UHI Outer Hebrides and find it beneficial to our company that these training and educational facilities are available locally.  The initial training, they have been given prior to any work placement has proved to be very successful giving the apprentices a good understanding about the workplace. The lecturers academic and practical skills handed down to the students is invaluable as there is a need to keep these skills on the island for future engineering needs especially for the small to medium companies like ourselves that need to retrain due to the ageing workforce.

If this service is not promoted well and continued, the engineering industry on the island is going to suffer with the lack of up and coming trainees. The college engineering facilities are a vital part of all types of engineering from training and testing. It is a very beneficial part of our future plans to keep the engineering facilities we have local and keep close contact with the college in ensure continuity of engineering service in the island.”
