Name: Karen Logue
Apprenticeship: Carpentry and Joinery
Employer: Lewis Builders
Why did you choose a Modern Apprenticeship: I wanted a job where I could learn while earning. It works well for me as a practically minded person
Do you have any scheduled classes as part of your MA? How do these take place (in-person/online) and how do they fit in with your working schedule? We have in person classes on campus in theory and practice. These fit in with work because I leave work for a couple of weeks and go to college. It is a good balance.
What do you think about the style of teaching and/or support you received from assessors/lecturers? Our lecturers are so supportive. There is a very much ‘do it yourself’ style of learning’ where we take responsibility for our learning and experience but with their expert skills.
What challenges have you encountered during your apprenticeship and how did you overcome them? I have been so lucky and have loved the apprenticeship.
What are your next steps after completing your Modern Apprenticeship? I want to work as a joiner and put all my skills into practice.
What advice would you give to those considering a Modern Apprenticeship? If you don’t like school, don’t hold back and just go for a Modern Apprenticeship. You are still in education but in a different environment.
What has been the highlight of your Modern Apprenticeship? Seeing a project happen from start to finish. It is so satisfying. So far, I have worked on the erection of a kit house, putting up partition walls, finishings, and roofing.
Anything else you feel like telling us about your experience? I would say go for it! You’re guaranteed a great time.
Lewis Builders said, “Karen has settled into her apprenticeship very well and is keen to learn. She is proving popular with the team, and we look forward to working with her as she develops her skills over the next few years.”
